Welcome

Welcome to Newport Cathedral – the seat of the Bishop of Monmouth and the mother church of her Diocese.

The Cathedral has deep spiritual roots and has been a sacred site for over fifteen hundred years. Here St Woolos (Gwynllyw) founded a place of prayer in the fifth century, following a vision and calling by God.

Here Christ has been present and proclaimed in word, sacrament and loving service, shining a beacon of hope for all. Here sanctuary has been found from the struggles and pains of life, that Christ may bid ‘all come to him who are weary and carrying heavy burdens’ (Mathew 11:28), to lay them before his throne of grace. Here key moments of life have been celebrated, rejoicing in the Lord with joy and gladness.

Today Newport Cathedral is a vibrant house of prayer and worship, offering an open and inclusive welcome to all, and reaching out in faithful and loving service. The arts have a central place in our life and we host many concerts, exhibitions and events. Music is at the core of our worship.

The smallest of the Welsh Cathedrals, it offers intimacy and versatility. We look forward to welcoming you in person whenever you are able to come through our doors.

Ian Black
Dean of Newport
